Fords with Heated Outside Rear View Mirrors (or ORVMs)

As part of their commitment to convenience and safety, Ford Motor Company has a history of developing and upgrading in-vehicle features.

As a driver, you've probably not given a lot of thought to your vehicle's mirrors or how they work. What you may not know is that they are a critical piece of safety equipment, providing visibility behind you while you're on the road.

Outside Rear View Mirrors (or ORVMs) are side mirrors that can be electronically adjusted. This is typically controlled by a four-way switch located on the driver's side of the vehicle. Built for convenience, this common feature allows a driver to adjust their mirrors while they are driving for the best visibility, which was not possible with traditional mirrors that needed manual adjustment.

What Is Heated ORVM?

Heated ORVMs are one of the newest innovations in side mirror technology. Designed for climates with variable weather and temperatures, heated mirrors are created to clear your rear view mirrors to provide maximized visibility during rain, snow, mist, or foggy conditions.

While these sound like a time-saving luxury that will save you time by preventing the need for defrosting, they are as important a safety feature as airbags. Created to help assist drivers during hazardous driving conditions, they help increase visibility to ensure a clear view in other lanes and behind your vehicle.

How Do Heated Mirrors Work?

Heated mirrors are specially designed with an integrated heating element built inside its housing. When the heating element is activated, it warms up, which helps defrost or defog the glass in the mirror, maximizing visibility without the scraping or wiping.

How Do I Know if My Ford Has Heated Mirrors, and How Do I Turn Them On?

If you're a Ford driver, how do you know if your vehicle has heated mirrors? There's three easy ways to tell that you already have heated mirrors:

  1. If this heated mirror icon is visible on the top left corner of your driver's side mirror
  2. If you have power-folding mirrors
  3. If you have a vehicle equipped with Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®)

If your vehicle has heated mirrors, turning them on is simple and easy to use. When you turn on your rear defrost by pressing the button on the center console, the heated mirrors will automatically turn on as well-no additional steps necessary!

Once they are activated, how long the heated mirrors take to clear will depend on the outside weather and temperature.

What Are the Advantages of Heated ORVM?

Heated mirrors may not be a trending feature for many customers like infotainment systems with touchscreens, ambient lighting or connectivity features like Bluetooth®*, Android Auto™, or Apple CarPlay®. However, most drivers tell us once they have them, they will never live without them! Some of their top reasons:

  • Increased driving visibility: Heated mirrors keep your rear views free and clear, giving you greater visibility of traffic behind you. In difficult driving scenarios, knowing what's behind you can be just as important as what's in front of you.
  • Improved safety: By keeping the view of adjacent lanes clear, you can prevent blind spots in inclement weather
  • Time-saving convenience: Heated mirrors can help you save time, by eliminating the need to defrost your mirrors in the morning, or stop to clear them during driving in inclement weather.

What Is the Difference Between Heated ORVM and Heated Rear Window?

Most drivers are familiar with heated rear windows, sometimes called a rear defroster. This common feature on most vehicles employs an electrical element that runs through the rear glass. As the element is activated by tapping the button on the interior of the vehicle, it heats up, warming the glass, acting as a defogger or defroster. This functionality helps clear the rear window of ice or fog.

A heated ORVM works the same way as the rear defroster! The heating element in the mirror warms up, helping melt and clear the glass in the rear view mirror. In most vehicles, these are also controlled by pressing the rear window defroster button.
