Benefits of electric cars, particularly Ford models

As an incredibly popular option in the automotive market, electric cars offer a number of benefits to drivers. Most of our customers highlight efficiency and savings, the driving experience, and environmental impact as their top reasons for choosing an electric vehicle.

Electric cars are incredibly energy efficient, allowing drivers to reduce their energy consumption over time. This can translate into a lower cost of driving, and with a fully electric vehicle, no more time-consuming stops at the gas station. Ford electric vehicles use regenerative braking to help recharge the vehicle's battery, increasing the driving range and allowing for further savings throughout ownership. Having a system that does not rely on gas or oil also reduces the need for regular maintenance and service required, and often means fewer wear parts replacements over time.

For additional savings, some models are eligible for federal and state tax credits. As of June 2023, drivers may qualify for the Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit under the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Tax Code. This credit offers up to $7,500 towards the purchase of a qualified plug-in electric vehicle. Arizona has also previously offered tax credits toward purchasing a qualifying electric vehicle. Our team can help you determine whether the Ford electric vehicle you're interested in qualifies for any credits for your situation.

Compared to driving a traditional vehicle, many EV drivers say they prefer the driving experience of an all-electric truck or car. An electric motor means that drives are often quieter with no engine noise, and instant-on acceleration promises a responsive and enjoyable drive.

Electric vehicles are well-known for their reputation as being better for the environment. With zero emissions from the tailpipe, EVs help reduce air pollution and thus, the impact on climate change. Knowing that they are contributing to positive change and also helping improve air quality for their neighbors in Scottsdale is important to many of our customers who choose Ford electric cars.

Electric cars vs gas-powered cars: The Ford perspective

While the electric and hybrid market grows, gas-powered cars are still the most common type on the road today. This type of vehicle relies on an internal combustion engine, which generally uses a spark provided by a spark plug to ignite gasoline stored inside a fuel tank to power the internal mechanical components.

In appearance, an electric car looks much like a gas-powered vehicle. Under the surface, the vehicle functions differently, using an electric motor that is powered by a battery. Most often, the battery is recharged by regenerative braking, as well as via charger or a wall outlet.

Hybrid vehicles pair an electric motor with the traditional internal combustion engine. The electric motor powers short trips, while the gas engine handles longer trips or those after the battery needs to be charged. The battery is charged via the gas engine and from regenerative braking. Hybrids offer improved fuel efficiency and do not need to be plugged in, but still require stops at the gas pump.

A Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is very similar to a hybrid but also offers the option to charge the battery with a charging port. This also allows for short trips that run on electric power, with the gas engine as backup for extended range.

As the newest type to the market, fully electric vehicles run 100% on their integrated battery and electric motor, with no gas engine backup. This means you no longer need to stop at the pump. Most EVs have a range of around 200 miles on a standard battery, while many have a more lengthy range with extended range options. These vehicles offer both fast and show charge options.

Price range of Ford electric cars in Scottsdale, AZ

If you're considering your first electric or hybrid Ford vehicle, knowing the costs involved are important to seeing if they are the right choice for your family. Many drivers choose a hybrid or electric vehicle for the savings they gain from driving one. The most direct savings are at the gas pump - with a fully electric vehicle, stopping to fill up is a thing of the past, and with a hybrid, it is a greatly reduced errand. Even though gas is still involved with a hybrid electric vehicle, the expected Miles Per Gallon (MPG) is dramatically increased.

Customers often want to know if the cost of purchasing an electric vehicle will offset the savings they can expect from improved fuel economy. While the first models to the market for hybrids and EVs were more pricey, most currently available options are more comparable to traditional internal combustion engines than ever before. The current line-up ranges from the affordable Escape Hybrid to the fully electric F-150 Lighting.

What's the range of an electric Ford vehicle?

Knowing the capacity and estimated range of the electric vehicle can help you determine if it's the right choice for you. Compare the most common electric Ford vehicle ranges:

  • The F-150 Lightning: this all-electric truck has an estimated range* of 240 miles on the standard range battery, and an impressive 300 to 320 miles on the available extended range battery
  • The Mustang Mach E: this electrified CUV features an estimated range* of 224 to 247 miles on the standard range battery, and a more lengthy 260 to 331 miles on the available extended range battery

* Please note: these ranges are EPA-estimated ranges and should be used as a guideline.

Like gas mileage in a traditional combustion engine, some factors can impact EV range and influence what a driver can expect from a charge. This includes things like:

  • Environmental factors, like very low outside temperatures, can influence a battery's charge and expected available range
  • Driving habits, like high rates of speed or frequent rapid acceleration, can impact the range that a driver can expect from their vehicle
  • Lifestyle habits, such as hauling a heavy payload or towing something weighty, can diminish the expected range

Knowing how you'll use your vehicle and what your typical driving habits are can help you determine which Ford EV is right for you, and whether it's worth investing in an extended-range battery as part of your purchase or lease.

Charging your Ford electric car

Charging your Ford electric cars is easy and convenient, with a number of options available to charge at home, at work or school, out in the community, or on the road. Many electric vehicle drivers find it even easier to integrate into their daily routine than stopping at a gas station - charging your vehicle is as easy as plugging your phone in at the end of the day!

Charging Your Ford EV at Home

To start charging your Ford EV, you don't need anything other than your vehicle's Ford Mobile Power Cord and any standard 120V wall outlet. This type of charging, known as Level 1 Charging, generally provides 3 to 5 miles of range for every hour your vehicle is plugged in. If you have a short commute or don't drive every day, this may be a suitable option for you and your lifestyle.

Switching to an existing 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet, the type you use in your home for a refrigerator or dryer, is the next step up and is referred to as Level 2 Charging. This charges a bit faster, and depending on how quickly your home can deliver energy to your charger, this can add between 5.5 and 60 miles of range for every hour an EV is plugged in. If you drive daily or have a longer commute, having an additional 240V outlet installed by a qualified electrician might be the right choice for your needs.

If you're a driver who wants the most power and quickest recharge speed, you can choose to upgrade your home to the Ford Connected Charge Station, which maximizes your vehicle's charging speed. This does require installation from a qualified electrician, but once hooked up, it will offer 48 amps of power on demand. This direct charger offers between 19 miles for every hour of charger time for the F-150 Lightning to 28 miles for each hour for the Mustang Mach-E.

Charging Your Ford EV in the Scottsdale Area

As of June 2023, there are over 360 total charging stations within 10 miles of the greater Scottsdale area, meaning you're never far from a charger. Most of these are Level 2 charging stations, while some are DC Fast Chargers (sometimes called Level 3 Chargers). Level 2 chargers work the same as the home chargers outlined above, while DC Fast Chargers can add as much as 10 miles of range with every minute of charging.

To make it even more convenient, many offices, schools, and universities offer charging stations that drivers can use while they are at work or in class. The best part? Nearly half of the local Scottsdale area chargers offer free charges - an added bonus in savings when switching to an EV.

Charging Your Ford EV While Traveling Beyond the Area

When you're out and about or on the road, you can charge your Ford electric vehicle to keep the trip going. With nearly 20,000 charging stations in the BlueOval Charge Network (BOCN) across the United States, you can often find a charger nearby, many offering free EV charging. You can use your FordPass Connect app to map out chargers that will be available along your route during a road trip, and use that to plan meals or rest stops. You can also use websites like Chargehub, or using smartphone apps like Google Maps or PlugShare.

Even better? Starting in 2024, Ford electric vehicle drivers will have additional options for charging, thanks to a recent deal with Tesla. With just a software upgrade and an adapter, Ford EVs can charge on the Tesla Supercharger network at locations in the US and Canada.
